Videos
Introduction (07:23) - Larry welcomes you to the series and gives you a play through of the track you'll be making together.
The Track Foundation Pt. 1 (09:46) - In this video, we create a Kick and rumble combination using Kick synthesis, sample layering and manipulating found sounds.
The Track Foundation Pt. 2 (11:01) - Larry continues setting the track foundation.
Fine Tuning the Kick & Additional Elements (16:35) - Next we add saturation to our kick drum and also add a baseline and off-beat Hi-Hat to fill out the groove. These sounds are then fine tuned to fit in the mix.
Adding FX Loops (11:40) - In this video, we add some extra FX loops to help us to add tension to the track and enhance the builds.
Adding an Acid Line (13:40) - See how to add an acid 303 line which will be the main hook of the track. We design the sound in Phoscyon and program a line around the root note of our scale.
303 FX & Drums (10:16) - In this video, we fine-tune the 303 line by adding a delay and then add some additional drums in the form of a 4/4 clap, and fast hats to give us more elements to keep the arrangement interesting. Finally we add a hoover style riser.
Basic Arrangement (14:02) - Larry now takes an arrangement from another track and copies it to get us into the arrangement mindset. He then creates an Intro, Main Track Body and Outro.
Bass Stab & Extra Clap (09:50) - See how to add an additional drum and bass style low stab to help add interest to the track, and then apply processing to fit it in. We also place a clap sound on the 2 and 4 beats to change the groove slightly.
303 Automation Pt. 1 (06:28) - In this video, we use Logic's Smart Controls to alter parameters on the 303 part playing from Phoscyon. This is mapped to a MIDI controller so we can introduce some live tweaking. We subsequently add an additional 303 to add momentum to the second drop.
303 Automation Pt. 2 (09:50) - Larry continues working on the 303's automation and tweaking.
Fine Tuning the FX & Arrangement (07:13) - Larry now arranges some of the incidental tension FX so the arrangement keeps moving forward. Some of these are automated so they crescendo to enhance transitions.
The Hoover Sound (11:41) - For the breakdown, we create a custom, Hoover style patch in Massive, and then automate parameters so it comes to life and builds up to the second drop. A reverb is also added to help the sound build even more up to the drop.
Adding Some Extra Parts (17:17) - In this video, we start by adding some crispness to the 303 parts with saturation. We then continue to add some additional fills and vocal FX to help fill out the arrangement.
Mixing It (14:09) - In this video, we add some stereo width to our hats and automate a flanger to create interest. We then apply some EQ, rolling off the low end in certain sounds, and add some hi pass processing on the stereo output as well.
Finishing It Up (12:11) - In this final video, we organize the project and apply limiters to the busses to help tame transients, and also add some parallel processing to the kick and clap to help them cut through. Lastly, we add a mastering chain to finalize our track!
