The Legend HZ Explained
In this detailed The Legend HZ video course, synth guru Larry Holcombe takes you on a deep dive into The Legend HZ, the amazing VI from Synapse Audio that builds upon the Moog-emulating predecessor, The Legend. The Legend HZ was designed in collaboration with film-scoring phenom Hans Zimmer and packs an incredible amount of functionality that caters especially well to the needs of a film composer, including an additional three oscillators, polyphony, a modulation matrix, and more! These The Legend HZ videos are designed for new users.
Videos
• Introduction & Interface (09:28) - This video introduces the series and outlines the different areas of the interface, including the features located on the front and rear panels. We also demonstrate the saving of presets.
• Oscillator Section (07:37) - We discuss the oscillators next, of which there are six. We also demonstrate tuning oscillators to create chords and layered sounds.
• Mixer Section (03:33) - Next up, we demonstrate using the mixer section to blend our oscillator levels. We also showcase the noise section, with both pink and white noise options available.
• Filter/Amplifier Section (12:44) - This video is concerned with the filter and amp sections, which, when combined with the dedicated filter and amp envelopes, allow us to create movement within patches.
• Top Section (09:46) - Explore the top section next, including pitch bend, mod wheel, glide, and polyphony.
• MSEG (09:34) - This video covers the multi-segment envelope generator, which allows us to create our own complex envelopes that can be routed for modulation.
• Modulation Matrix Pt. 1 (09:45) - In this video, we demonstrate the modulation matrix (especially the modulation sources) using velocity as an example. This is where we can create movement in sounds by routing modulation sources to various destinations.
• Modulation Matrix Pt. 2 (08:00) - This video focuses on the modulation destinations, and we create several modulation routings (including modulating the modulation matrix itself!). We also modulate the reverb wet/dry balance for some interesting effects.
• OSC 3 & 6 as LFOs (08:42) - Next up, we focus on using OSC 3 and 6 as LFOs. This allows us to create cyclical modulations and bring our sounds to life.
• Sequencer/Arpeggiator (16:33) - We cover the sequencer/arpeggiator next and see how to create arpeggiated melodies. We can also import our own monophonic MIDI files and use the sequencer to generate modulation signals to create interesting sequenced movement.
• Global/Modulation Section (12:53) - This video demonstrates the sections on the rear panel of Legend HZ that allow us to emulate different types of vintage synthesizers. We can change the phase of the three oscillators and also sync LFO 3 to the project tempo.
• Effects (06:21) - Learn all about the effects section next, with special focus on the fixed filter bank.
• Sound Design (10:33) - This video demonstrates how to create a dark, cinematic pad sound utilizing many of the concepts and features covered throughout the video series.
