Space Control Explained

Join production guru Larry Holcombe for a deep dive into Space Control, the stereo processing tool from Acustica and Studio DMI in collaboration between DJ/producer Hardwell and audio engineer Luca Pretolesi. In this Space Control video course, you'll learn the function of each parameter, what it does, and how to use it, with many telling audio demonstrations along the way. From sophisticated mid/side processing and balancing to correcting phase issues and ensuring mono-compatibility, Larry covers it all in detail so you'll be ready to start using Space Control with earnest on your very next song. These Space Control videos are designed for new Space Control users.

Videos
Introduction & Interface (04:21) - This video introduces the series and outlines the different areas of the interface. We also discuss the ethos behind this plugin and the collaboration between Hardwell and Luca Pretolesi.
Master Left Section (03:01) - We discuss the Master Left section next, including the analyzer modes so we can visualize the effect the processing is having on the stereo field. We also discuss input gain and the preamp section for generating extra side information.
Master Right Section (04:12) - Next up, we cover the Master Right section, allowing us to internally bypass the plugin?s processing, the output gain, and auto gain matching. We also demonstrate soloing the center and side bands to really focus on these areas of the stereo field.
Internal Controls (11:31) - This video is concerned with the internal controls, which is where the main processing is applied. Here we can change the gain structure, generate extra side band information, and reduce or increase the side information which is already present. We also cover the all-important Phase Limit control, which ensures we keep extreme processing mono-compatible.
Bottom Bar (03:43) - Next up, we investigate the linear phase and true phase modes, where we can avoid phase distortion and also keep the stereo width coherent in true phase mode.
Space Control in Action Pt. 1 (14:39) - We have a look at some use cases focusing more on mixing applications, including creating stereo width from mono sources, fixing out-of-phase material, and also picking out different areas of the frequency spectrum to widen the different sides.
Space Control in Action Pt. 2 (17:33) - We cover using Space Control in mastering applications, such as creating excitement for a final chorus by automating stereo width.
